Premier McGuinty Praises John Manley As "A Great Canadian"

Premier Dalton McGuinty Issued The Following Statement In Response To This Morning's Announcement That Deputy Prime Minister And Minister Of Finance John Manley Will Not Seek Re-election To The House Of Commons

Office of the Premier

"Today John Manley announced his decision not to seek re-election in the next federal election. In doing so, Canada has lost one of the most outstanding representatives the House of Commons has ever seen. I would like to take this opportunity to thank this great Canadian for more than 15 years of public service.

I have had the privilege of working closely with John throughout his years in politics. Having shared the riding of Ottawa South with John for the past 13 years, I have witnessed time and again his drive to work for his constituents. On the national scene, all Canadians were made proud by his strong leadership, especially through the difficult aftermath of 9/11. John Manley has made Canada a better place for us all.

John's family has made many sacrifices during his years in public life. I know that he and Judith will now enjoy having some more time to spend together themselves and with their children.

As a political colleague, I have learned and benefited from his counsel. As a friend, I can think of no one more honest and reliable.

On behalf of Terri and our family, I want to wish John and Judith, and their children Rebecca, David and Sarah, all the best in the years to come.

On behalf of all Ontarians, thank you."
