McGuinty Government Committed To Secure, Open Border
Access To U.S. Markets Essential To Ontario’s Prosperity
TORONTO -- Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said today his government is supporting a strong and prosperous economy by working to maintain an open and secure Canada-U.S. border.
"Border security is essential to strengthening our friendship with the United States and to continuing the successful economic partnership we've built together," said Premier McGuinty.
"Those of us who are deeply concerned about an open border -- and the free flow of goods -- must demonstrate that we are equally committed to a secure border."
More than 90 per cent of Ontario's exports go to the U.S. The government has undertaken several initiatives to help ensure the border remains open to this vital trade including:
- Creating two additional Integrated Border Enforcement Teams (IBETs) to cover every critical point across the entire Canada-U.S. border.
- Supporting the federal government's 30-point Smart Border initiative.
- Working with carriers, shippers and inspection agencies on both sides of the border to implement safe and efficient inspection processes.
- Investing in border infrastructure and cooperating with local municipalities to improve key crossings at Sarnia, Niagara and Windsor.
Premier McGuinty spoke at the CAN>WIN 04 Conference, a gathering of political leaders, business people and academics sponsored by Microsoft Canada. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Ontario's relationship with the United States.
"Our border must be secure because nothing is more important than the safety of our people. And our border must be open to legitimate trade because nothing is more integral to the prosperity of our people," said Premier McGuinty.
