Remarks By Dalton McGuinty, Premier Of Ontario At The Amethyst Awards Ceremony
Check Against Delivery
I want to extend my congratulations to the people we're honouring here today.
Ontario is blessed with a public service that is second to none ... and you, our recipients, are second to none within that public service.
That's quite an achievement.
Because, let's face it, the competition is pretty fierce.
In every ministry ... in every office ... in every job you do ... the men and women of the OPS are striving to make a real, positive difference in the lives of Ontarians.
And I'm very proud of work done by each and every person in this room.
I've always said Ontario's public servants were the best in the world.
And it's something I've said a lot.
Especially in the last six months.
And I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work ... honest and impartial advice ... and dedication.
You know, I first ran for office because, like you, I believe in public service ... and I believe in government.
I believe that government is one of the most important ways that we, as people, can come together to overcome today's challenges and build a better future.
I'm proud to serve the public.
But don't get me wrong ... I also know public service can be tough.
That being dedicated to the people of Ontario means you sometimes have to spend time away from your own friends and families.
That there are critics and cynics who have all kinds of uninformed opinions about public servants.
I urge you ... don't listen to them.
Because I know -- as most Ontarians know -- that you do so much, so well.
Whether you're meeting with clients at a front desk ... or meeting with stakeholder groups.
Whether you're sitting at a boardroom table ... or backpacking through the backcountry.
Whether you're helping to create policy ... or making sure regulations are enforced and people are protected ...
The work that you do, day after day, makes Ontario a healthier, cleaner, safer and more prosperous province.
And you have my commitment that our government will do its part and support your work to the best of our ability.
We'll be open to your ideas and suggestions on how to better deliver the programs and services Ontarians need the most.
We'll give you the tools you need to do your job more efficiently.
We'll provide you with opportunities to sharpen and acquire new skills.
And we'll make sure you're respected and supported in your workplace.
Because we are all in this together -- as elected officials and public servants.
There's a saying in my family -- that none of us is as strong as all of us.
In other words, when people work together, there's nothing they can't accomplish.
So let's work with Ontarians to make government work for Ontarians.
Let's work together to build a stronger, healthier, more prosperous province.
And let's work together for our families and our future.
Because together, we can help build a quality of life in this province that is second to none.
We can build the kind of province we can be proud to pass on to our children and grandchildren.
Working together, that Ontario is ours to deliver.
