Celebrating Excellence In Teaching

New Awards Foster Excellence In Education By Recognizing Excellence In Teaching

Office of the Premier

TORONTO -- The new Premier's Awards for Teaching Excellence will celebrate the best work done by teachers, principals, vice-principals and education support workers in our classrooms, schools and communities, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced today.

"Next to parents and families, who play the most important role of all, teachers are the greatest single influence over our children's future, and we also know they depend on their colleagues, education support workers, to get the job done," Premier McGuinty said.

"Each school day, society presents teachers with our most precious resource, our children, and our most challenging task: moulding them into good citizens and capable workers," he said.

"Each year, we want to recognize staff in all schools who excel and overcome countless challenges to unlock the limitless potential of our young people."

Awards will be handed out each year for overall Teacher of the Year and nine other categories in elementary and secondary education. The categories include the contribution made by new teachers, excellence in teaching children with special needs, a lifetime of achievement in teaching, and excellence by support workers.

"We will celebrate these educators' accomplishments as examples of the fine work done by so many teachers and support staff all year long, right across our province," said Education Minister Gerard Kennedy.

Award recipients will be honoured at an annual ceremony hosted by the Premier. A special recognition award will be given to each recipient's school, in the teacher's name, in the form of a project or program that benefits students.

"I want our teachers to know, and I want our parents and students to know, that the neglect of the past is over," Premier McGuinty said.

"We recognize that excellence in teaching is fundamental to excellence in public education, and excellence in public education is fundamental to Ontario's future."

Further details on application forms and nomination timelines will be available within the next two weeks.
