Premier McGuinty Makes Two Key Education Appointments

QUEEN'S PARK -- Premier Dalton McGuinty today announced the following appointments:

Dr. Ben Levin will become Deputy Minister of Education effective December 6. Dr. Levin is currently a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba. He was the Deputy Minister of the Manitoba Department of Education, Training and Youth, and the Department of Advanced Education, and Dean of Continuing Education with the University of Manitoba. His qualifications include managing large staffs and budgets, coordinating university grants policy and funding, and leading planning and research activities in Manitoba and with the Peel Board of Education. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, a Master of Education from Harvard and an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Avis Glaze will become the first Chief Student Achievement Officer of Ontario and Chief Executive Officer of the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat effective November 1. Dr. Glaze is currently Director of Education with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. She has taught at all levels of the education system and has experience as a secondary school administrator, Education Officer with the Ontario Ministry of Education, a Commissioner on the Ontario Royal Commission on Learning and as Associate Director of Education with the York Region District School Board. She has completed two Master of Education programs -- in educational administration and guidance and counselling -- and has a Doctorate in Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
