A Statement From Premier Dalton McGuinty On The Passing Of His Holiness Pope John Paul Ii

Office of the Premier

TORONTO -- Like a great many people across Ontario, I was saddened to hear of the death of His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

His Holiness will go down in history as a giant of the 20th century. He was a man who shaped events with the force of his personality and the strength of his message.

He will long be remembered for his commitment to freedom, justice, peace and the world's young people.

His Holiness made two extended visits to our province as pontiff, first in 1984 and most recently for World Youth Day in 2002. On each occasion he touched the hearts and lives of thousands of Ontarians and visitors from all over the world.

On behalf of the people of Ontario, I extend our deepest sympathies to the millions of people all over the world who today mourn his passing.
