A Statement From Premier Dalton McGuinty On The Passing Of Beland Honderich
The Star has lost an icon. Journalism has lost a giant. And Canada has lost a man of immeasurable integrity. But most of all, each one of us has lost a champion.
Beland Honderich did more than build a great newspaper. Through his beloved Star, the compelling stories it chose to tell, and the courageous editorial positions it chose to take, Beland Honderich made his city, his province and his country stronger. He always understood that only by standing up for everyday people and working families, could Canada become a nation of uncommon greatness.
A self-made man, he made Canadian society stronger and more compassionate. Beland Honderich proved the power of the pen is greatest when it is matched with a superb intellect, a caring heart and an uncompromising belief in doing what is right.
On behalf of all Ontarians, I want to express my condolences to his family. May his legacy be that we see that while the world changes constantly, his principles are truly timeless.
