Deputy Minister Appointments
QUEEN'S PARK -- Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the following Deputy Minister appointments:
Paavo Kivisto will become Deputy Minister of the Environment effective November 28, 2005
Mr. Kivisto was formerly the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Labour. Previously, he was the Assistant Deputy Minister, Integrated Service Delivery, Ministry of Consumer and Business Services. Mr. Kivisto has also served as Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations. He has held senior management positions in Mining, Health and Safety in the Ministry of Labour. Mr. Kivisto holds a B.Sc. in mining from Queen's University.
Virginia West will become Deputy Minister of Labour effective November 28, 2005
Ms. West was formerly the Deputy Minister of the Environment and the Deputy Minister of Public Safety and Policing Services in the former Ministry of Public Safety and Security. Previously, she was the Commissioner of Urban Planning and Development Services and the Commissioner of City Property for the City of Toronto, and the Chief Administrative Officer for the Borough of East York. Ms. West has held senior executive positions in Management Board Secretariat and the Ministry of Government Services. Before that, she was a lawyer with Lawlor & LeClaire, Barristers and Solicitors. Ms. West holds a BA and an MBA from the University of Toronto and an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School.
Deborah Newman will become Deputy Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services effective December 3, 2005
Ms. Newman was formerly Deputy Minister of Community Safety in the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Before that, she was the Assistant Deputy Minister of Youth Justice Services in the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Ms. Newman has held Assistant Deputy Minister positions in Youth Justice Services, Community and Youth Justice Services and
Community and Young Offender Services. She has held senior management positions in Ontario's Solicitor General and Correctional Services departments, Alberta's Correctional Services Department and the Federal Department of Correctional Services. Ms. Newman holds a BA in psychology and an MA in criminology from the University of Ottawa.
Shelly Jamieson will become Deputy Minister of Transportation effective January 3, 2006
Ms. Jamieson is currently President of Extendicare Canada Inc. and serves on the Board of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. Previously, she was the Vice-President of Eastern Operations at Extendicare Canada Inc. She was the former Executive Director of the Ontario Nursing Home Association. While serving in this position, she was appointed as a volunteer Commissioner of the Health Services Restructuring Commission. She was Principal of Envirimed Inc., President of Jamieson Research and Consulting Inc. and has held research positions with A.W. Cluff and P.J. Cluff, Architects and Planners. Ms. Jamieson has an honours BA in urbanstudies from the University of Toronto
