Premier Mcguinty Welcomes Governor General Michaëlle Jean

First Official Visit Focuses On Meeting Students And Community Leaders

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and MPPs from all parties welcomed Governor General Michaëlle Jean on her first visit to the province at a special ceremony held today at the Ontario legislature.

"Ontarians from all walks of life have a deep admiration and respect for our Governor General, and for the hopes and dreams she inspires in people across the country," said Premier McGuinty.

During her visit, the Governor General is meeting with Premier McGuinty at Queen's Park and touring the newly opened Gallery of Canada's First Peoples at the Royal Ontario Museum. Meetings are also planned with the Toronto Youth Cabinet and a presentation will be made to scholarship students in honour of Black History Month.

In recognition of her first official visit, the Premier is presenting the Governor General with an official gift in the form of a $5,000 contribution made through the Trillium Foundation to support Lieutenant Governor James K. Bartleman's Aboriginal Literacy Summer Camps.

"I want to thank the Governor General for choosing to serve Canada and Canadians and for her commitment to making this a better world," said Premier McGuinty. "By working and dreaming together, listening to one another and believing in each other, we can make Ontario and Canada, the place to be, for generations to come."
