McGuinty Government To Invest In Greek Cultural Centre
New Facility Will Celebrate Ontario’s Diversity, Strengthen Local Communities
The Ontario government is promoting diversity and building strong communities with a commitment of $1 million for the Hellenic Cultural and Community Centre, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced today.
"This centre is all about bringing people together, celebrating heritage and enriching our province," said Premier McGuinty. "We're proud to join Ontario's vibrant Greek community in supporting this important project."
The Premier announced the government's $1-million commitment at a gala dinner honouring Greek Independence Day. This brings the Province's total commitment in the centre to $2 million.
"The government's financial support means so much to our community," said Costas Menegakis, President of the Greek Community of Toronto. "Thanks to this generous contribution we are closer to realizing our dream."
Construction is now underway on the centre. The state-of-the-art facility will include a theatre, a library, a gymnasium, a community hall, a museum, banquet hall facilities and much more. It will serve Ontario's Greek community and bring people together to celebrate diversity and promote Greek history and culture.
"Whether our families have been here for centuries, decades or days, deep down, we are all the same -- with the same basic hopes and dreams," said Premier McGuinty. "It is up to us to work and build and dream together so that we can make Ontario even stronger for the generations to come."
