Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty Congratulates Ottawa On Winning Bid To Host World Junior Hockey Championships

Office of the Premier

Ontarians are proud and excited to hear that Ottawa has been chosen to host the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Hockey has given so much to our province. More than 400,000 amateur coaches, trainers and players are involved in the game in Ontario. Hockey teaches our young people about teamwork, commitment and sportsmanship.

It has given us great memories. And that's why we're thrilled by the opportunity to give something back to the game.

I know our people will get behind this tournament. And so will our government. We're investing $2 million to help ensure the best World Juniors ever.

I want to congratulate everyone involved in this great achievement, including Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson, Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli, Bid Chair Eugene Melnyk, Cyril Leeder, Jeff Hunt and Jules Lavictoire.

And I'd like to extend an invitation to hockey lovers around the world to join us in Ottawa for this outstanding display of the best young talent in the game.

See you all in Ottawa in 2009.
