McGuinty Government Supports New Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice

Palliative Care Home Will Provide Comfort, Compassion To Hamilton Families

Office of the Premier

The Ontario government is improving access to palliative care for Hamilton families by supporting the new Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, announced Premier Dalton McGuinty.

"Hamilton is a community where people look out for one another, care for each other and help each other through the tougher times in life," said Premier McGuinty. "That's why our government is proud to do our part for the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice."

In total, the government is providing over $2 million to support the hospice. A $1.6-million grant will help the new hospice open as soon as possible. The government will also invest $580,000 annually to help cover operating costs.

These investments build on the community's efforts to raise funds for the hospice. An ad placed in the Hamilton Spectator called on each Hamiltonian to donate $4. The community's contributions -- along with public and private sector funding -- have helped ensure Bob's House gets built.

"Dr. Bob" has been practising family medicine in the Hamilton area for more than 50 years, and has been a driving force for improved palliative care. He also played a key role in bringing St. Joseph's Centre for Ambulatory Health Services to Hamilton's east end.

"This is a wonderful day and I thank the Lord that I am here to see it," said Dr. Kemp. "Caring for the dying and their families has always been very important to me. What started as providing services in the east end has grown to encompass a community. This new facility will ensure that everyone in our community will have access to the care they need and the dignity they deserve."

Today's announcement is part of the government's plan to strengthen health care for Hamilton families. Other initiatives include:

  • Improving Complex Continuing Care Services at St. Peter's Hospital by providing a $1.3-million grant to support the new floor on the East Wing
  • Speeding up access to care by supporting more medical procedures and scans in the Hamilton region
  • Creating 10 Family Health Teams that provide comprehensive care to Hamilton area residents.

"Today is about Hamilton's vision and the hard work that's made the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice a reality," said Premier McGuinty. "It's about all the families who you've helped along the way -- and all those you'll help in the future."
