McGuinty Government Strengthening Ontario's Economy

The McGuinty government moved Ontario forward during the spring legislative session with legislation and forward looking policy that will make Ontario's economy stronger.

Because of the government's efforts to make our economy greener and open to new investment, there will be more job opportunities for Ontario families.

The spring legislative session was very active with 16 bills passed.

Highlights include:

Green Energy Act: Bringing more clean, green energy online more easily and creating 50,000 jobs over three years in the process.

Budget 2009: Helping families by strengthening Ontario's economy with investments in education and training, research, infrastructure, partnerships with business and comprehensive tax reform that will cut in half Ontario's tax rate on new business investment.

Metrolinx legislation: Combining GO Transit and Metrolinx into a single regional transit agency that will plan and build transit across the GTA.

Scope of Practice: Improving access to care by enabling health care providers to use more of their skills and training to provide primary care.

Poverty Reduction Act: Ensures helping people escape poverty remains a priority by requiring successive governments to report annually on their poverty reduction programs and policies as well as common indicators of poverty, like health and income.

Creates a single, youth justice correctional system completely separate from the adult system.

Allows a person to offer an apology without constituting an admission of guilt or fault for an incident.

Bill 115 Coroners Amendment Act, 2009
Strengthens death investigation in Ontario by addressing the report of the Honourable Justice Stephen Goudge's Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario.

Bill 118 Countering Distracted Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act, 2009
Prohibits drives from using hand-held cell phones and other hand-held electronic entertainment or communications devices while driving.

Bill 126 Road Safety Act, 2009
Tracks and increases the penalties for those caught drinking and driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05-0.08 (warning range) and will require zero blood alcohol for drivers under 21.

Improve the responsiveness of the family justice system and provides greater protection for victims of domestic violence.

Bill 139 Employment Standards Amendment Act (Temporary Help Agencies), 2009
Ensures temporary workers know their rights and aren't unfairly kept from getting permanent jobs.

Bill 141 Regulated Health Professions Amendment Act, 2009
Gives more power to health regulatory colleges to observe and investigate a health practitioner performing high risk procedures like cosmetic surgery.

Makes it easier to get renewable energy online, creating 50,000 jobs in the process.

Bill 152 Poverty Reduction Act, 2009
Commits government to set poverty reduction targets every five years and then report on indicators and initiatives to achieve those targets.

Protects the job of those who take a leave to donate an organ to someone in need.

Bill 155 Tobacco Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act, 2009
Allows the Province to recover health care costs from tobacco related diseases.

Bill 157 Education Amendment Act (Keeping Our Kids Safe at School), 2009
Requires school staff to report serious student incidents to the principal, and requires principals to contact the parents of victims.
