Ontario Premier's Statement On Iranian Elections

Premier Joins Iranian Canadian Community and Federal Government In Call For Transparency

Office of the Premier

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty released the following statement regarding recent elections in Iran:

"The Ontario government is deeply concerned over allegations of voter fraud in the recent presidential elections in Iran.

Ontario fully acknowledges, echoes and supports the Government of Canada's call for a full investigation into these electoral discrepancies. We urge the federal government to continue closely monitoring the situation in Iran.

Ontario believes that open and transparent elections are the foundation of a strong democracy and that the will of the Iranian people should be reflected in free, fair and authentic elections.

Today, we join with the Iranian Canadian community in urging Iran to respect the rights of their citizens. It's my hope that the situation will come to a just and peaceful resolution."
