Premier Expresses Condolences On The Passing Of Jean-Robert Gauthier
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty released the following statement regarding the death of former senator and Member of Parliament Jean-Robert Gauthier:
"I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jean-Robert Gauthier. On behalf of 13 million Ontarians, I want to express our deep gratitude for a lifetime of public service.
Jean-Robert Gauthier's dedication to Canada and, in particular, to safeguarding our francophone heritage, has left an indelible mark on our country and its history.
He played a key role in the wording of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He vigorously opposed the closure of Montfort Hospital in Ottawa. And he helped spearhead the Official Languages Act.
He was also instrumental in establishing French-language school boards in Ontario. His leadership has left a lasting, living legacy, with over 90,000 children today studying at over 420 French-language primary and secondary schools.
These schools have made a tremendous difference in the lives of a great many Ontario families, including mine.
We shall miss Jean-Robert dearly and our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones."
