Premier's Statement on GTA Flooding

Office of the Premier

Premier Wynne issued the following statement on the flooding in the GTA:

"I want to thank everyone involved in the response to last night's flooding in and around the City of Toronto and the City of Mississauga.

From first responders, city employees and hydro crews to the generosity of men and women checking on their elderly neighbours and the patience of those who shared their snacks on the stranded GO train, Ontario residents have demonstrated great endurance, resilience and good humour.

This morning I called Mayor Ford to offer my support and commend the efforts of his municipal employees. We have also been in touch with Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion to offer our thanks and support for her city's efforts. Our government and its agencies remain available to affected municipalities and our Emergency Management Ontario is in contact with city officials.

We are working with our partners in Toronto and Mississauga to restore power, and I commend them for their collaboration and hard work. I know there remain areas without power, and I thank everyone involved in the continued efforts to address this situation. It is important that we all do our part to conserve energy and ease the strain on our public services as much as possible. Steps are being taken today to reduce power use in government buildings wherever possible.

Our team at the Ministry of Transportation worked to re-open highways as quickly as possible last night and GO Transit is making every effort to keep passengers safe and restore regular services. I encourage everyone to be safe in their daily commute.

Collaboration and communication are so important as we work to address the challenges posed by such natural occurrences, and I thank everyone for their patience and perseverance at this time."
