Premier Wynne Meets with Governor of Vermont

Office of the Premier

While at the Climate Summit of the Americas in Mexico, Premier Kathleen Wynne released the following statement on her meeting with Governor of Vermont Peter Shumlin:

"Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin and I had an informative meeting on fighting climate change by reducing carbon emissions through innovation and energy efficiency.

Vermont's approach to climate change has already been instructive for Ontario. While developing Ontario's Climate Change Action Plan, we looked at best practices from several U.S. states, including Vermont. Efficiency Vermont is a good example of how governments can help businesses and citizens reduce carbon emissions by becoming more energy efficient.

Introducing new carbon emission reduction initiatives, including Ontario's cap and trade program, will lead to a stronger demand for innovative cleantech and energy-efficient technology. Today, Governor Shumlin and I examined potential areas for collaboration and how we can generate new research, products and ideas by supporting our innovation sectors.

As more subnational governments implement programs designed to fight climate change, we must maintain open lines of communication to maximize our effectiveness. Strong coordination and partnerships among jurisdictions are essential to fighting climate change.

Ontario will continue working with all levels of government to achieve our provincial, national and international climate change goals."
