Ontario Supporting New Food Processing Jobs in Bobcaygeon
Major Expansion at Kawartha Dairy Will Boost Region’s Economy
Ontario is partnering in the biggest expansion of Kawartha Dairy's facilities in the company's 80-year history, helping to create 10 new jobs and secure 115 existing jobs in Bobcaygeon.
Premier Kathleen Wynne was at the renowned dairy today to announce the government's support for a new state-of-the-art refrigeration facility. This investment, through the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, will help the family-owned company better ensure consistent product quality and explore new product lines so it can expand its domestic and export markets.
Kawartha Dairy makes all of its products using fresh milk from Ontario farms and is an important employer in the Kawartha region. The government's support for the new facility will help the company build upon its success while also strengthening the province's food processing sector.
Investing in Eastern Ontario businesses is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.
- Kawartha Dairy sells products such as ice cream, milk and butter through its nine retail stores. It also supplies a wide range of retailers, restaurants and large grocery chains including Loblaws, Sobeys and Wal-Mart.
- Ontario is investing $311,200 in this project, with Kawartha Dairy funding the remaining 96 per cent. It is expected to be completed by the fall of 2017.
- Since 2013, the Eastern Ontario Development Fund (EODF) has helped to create and retain 7,500 jobs and attracted about $430 million in investment.
- The EODF funds up to 15 per cent of eligible costs for projects by qualified businesses that are growing and creating jobs in the advanced manufacturing, food processing, life sciences, information and communications technology, tourism and cultural sectors.
“We want to make sure that people in every part of our province share in the benefits of the economic growth we are achieving. Kawartha Dairy is a wonderful Ontario success story. Our new state-of-the-art refrigerated and frozen distribution facility in Bobcaygeon will help take our company to the next level by growing our presence and exploring new product lines to better serve our valued customers in Ontario and beyond.”
