Ontario shows gratitude to war veterans
McGuinty Government Sponsors Veteran Appreciation Events
Ontario will sponsor Veteran Appreciation Days in 10 communities this year to honour the sacrifices of veterans.
The kick-off event in Barrie today coincides with the anniversary of the Allies' liberation of Europe during the Second World War in 1945 (VE Day).
Ontario also supports the heritage of veterans through initiatives such as:
- Ontario Remembers, a website dedicated to the contribution of Ontarians in WW II
- The Memory Project, an educational program that connects veterans and students.
- More than 1.5 million Canadians served in the two world wars and the Korean War.
- About 80,000 of these veterans live in Ontario.
“We are proud to honour the legacy of our military heroes by supporting Veteran Appreciation Days in communities across the province.”
“Veterans Appreciation Day recognizes the important sacrifices made by veterans in Ontario and allows community members to show their appreciation outside of Remembrance Week.”
