UPDATED: Ontario Celebrating Two-Year Countdown to 2015 Pan American Games

Pan Am and Parapan Am Games

Michael Chan, Minister Responsible for the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games, along with other government representatives, will kick-off the two-year countdown to the 2015 Pan Am Games in several communities today. 

St. Catharines **UPDATED**

Jim Bradley, MPP for St. Catharines, will join the festivities near the Royal Canadian Henley, host venue for the rowing competitions in the 2015 Games. The St. Catharines Rowing Club will run rowing clinics and a veteran versus amateur race will follow.

Oshawa **UPDATED**

Soo Wong, MPP for Scarborough--Agincourt, will be in Oshawa to take part in an event that features an exhibition boxing match with Olympians Mandy Bujold and Mary Spencer, a Métis drumming performance and mural unveiling.

Mississauga **UPDATED**

Harinder Takhar, MPP for Mississauga--Erindale, and 2011 Pan Am Taekwondo Gold Medalist Melissa Pagnotta will join in the festivities in Mississauga that will highlight sporting activities for kids, cultural performances and a live Spanish band.

Minister Chan will be in the official host city of the Games to take part in an event at Commerce Court that will feature interactive sport activities, seven mural unveilings and a variety of sport demonstrations.

Minister Chan, athletes and officials will participate in the very first ribbon-cutting of a 2015 Games venue at the Welland Pan Am Flatwater Centre. Various activities for kids including dragon boating, a race and autograph signing by Canadian sprint canoeist Mark Oldershaw are some of the featured events.

Minister Chan will join professional table tennis player Sun Jian Fei at the Markham Civic Centre. This event will feature badminton and table tennis games, local food vendors serving dishes from the Pan Americas, and more.

Joe Dickson, MPP for Ajax--Pickering, will join National Women's Softball athlete Jessica Tyler at the Ajax Pan Am Ballpark, future host of the 2015 Games' baseball and softball sporting events, to take part in clinics, exhibition games and a mural unveiling.

Ted McMeekin, MPP for Ancaster--Dundas--Flamborough--Westdale, will celebrate at Sackville Hill Park & Recreation Centre with First Nation ceremonies and performances by a mariachi band and the Hamilton Youth Steel Orchestra, a soccer clinic and an exhibition game and halftime show with Canadian Idol winner Brian Melo.

Helena Jaczek, MPP for Oak Ridges--Markham, and Olympian Jessica Phoenix will be at the Caledon Pan Am Equestrian Park which was recently upgraded to host the equestrian events in 2015. Guests will be able to tour the facility and watch equine demonstrations.

Kevin Flynn, MPP for Oakville, will join Olympian Curt Harnett at Victoria Park Square for a cycling circuit led by athletes and community leaders, cultural presentations and a mural unveiling.
