Joint Statement from President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services

Treasury Board Secretariat

The following Statement was issued today by Deb Matthews, Deputy Premier and President of the Treasury Board, and Yasir Naqvi, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services:

"Correctional Services staff in our communities work hard every day to keep us safe, and we acknowledge the difficult challenges they face, including managing greater numbers of inmates who suffer from mental health and addiction issues.  We are modernizing our correctional system for the 21st century, providing better services to help break the cycle of reoffending in our justice system.

The recent tentative agreement with the Corrections Bargaining Unit of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union is further evidence of the Ontario government's continued support for correctional, probation and parole officers.

If ratified, it will provide a stand-alone Correctional Bargaining Unit collective agreement with binding interest arbitration.  We are committed to introducing the necessary legislative changes that will allow this new framework to proceed with certainty.

Correctional Services staff are a vital part of the work that is underway to modernize our correctional system and we have a renewed opportunity to work together under a new framework ‎that will allow us to move forward on that transformation together. We are steadfast in our commitment to that new framework."
