The Ontario government is pleased to announce the appointment of two new judges to the Ontario Court of Justice, effective December 5, 2024.
Justice Juliana Martel was called to the Ontario bar in 2008. She articled with a bilingual law firm in Ottawa prior to joining the Ministry of the Attorney General, where she has been working as an assistant Crown attorney for the past 16 years. In that time, Justice Martel prosecuted complex cases in both official languages, including sexual violence, homicides, child abuse and guns and gangs prosecutions. She also regularly appeared before the Ontario Review Board as Crown counsel. In addition, Justice Martel served as a mentor with the provincewide Crown Mentorship Program, the Sexual Violence Mentorship Program and the University of Ottawa’s Criminal Law Courthouse Mentorship Program.
Justice Martel is a devoted volunteer in her community. She has been extensively involved in youth minor hockey, recently holding the position of director of competitive hockey in her district, and has co-led a diversity and inclusion initiative with various partners under Hockey Eastern Ontario. Justice Martel has also been an involved parent with her children’s school council including roles as president and vice-president. During that time, she held meetings and championed several initiatives including adopting safeguards for virtual learning and bullying.
Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Martel to Ottawa.
Justice Jane Wendy Yee Kin Shin was called to the Ontario bar in 2005. After working as a junior lawyer with David/Charles Barristers, she began her own practice in 2006, focused exclusively on family law. Appearing before the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice, Justice Yee Kin Shin has represented and supported clients from a variety of different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, including a large number of legal aid clients. She has also been a member of the Family Law Duty Counsel panel since May 2018.
Justice Yee Kin Shin has been an active member in her community. Since March 2021, she has volunteered with the Anti-Black Racism and Black Excellence Advisory Committee with the Durham Catholic District School Board, promoting an education system free from discrimination and harassment. Justice Yee Kin Shin has also been an active member of the North York Toronto Family Court Education Committee at the Ontario Court of Justice since 2016, ensuring lawyers and stakeholders are informed of new resources and current legal issues. Justice Yee Kin Shin is fluent in English, French and Creole.
Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Yee Kin Shin to Brampton.
