Ontario Consulting on Auto Insurance Report

Province Seeking Feedback to Make Auto Insurance More Affordable

Ministry of Finance

Ontario is seeking feedback on recommendations aimed at making auto insurance more affordable and improving the care people injured in accidents receive.

The government is accepting submissions regarding Fair Benefits Fairly Delivered: A Review of the Auto Insurance System in Ontario. The report by David Marshall, Ontario's adviser on auto insurance, recommends transformative steps to improve health outcomes for those hurt in collisions, reduce insurance costs, and strengthen consumer protection.

The province is also consulting now with industry participants and members of the public will be invited to provide their comments on the report and its recommendations online until September 5, 2017.

Affordable auto insurance and improved health outcomes for those hurt in accidents are part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

Quick Facts

  • Recent Ontario auto insurance changes are lowering premiums for drivers who use winter tires, helping people resolve disputes about benefits faster and clarifying what you’ll pay if your car is towed and stored after an accident.
  • Minor injuries account for approximately 70 to 80 per cent of auto insurance claims while catastrophic injuries account for about one per cent.
  • David Marshall is a former president and CEO of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. He is also an adviser to the government on pensions.

Additional Resources

“The government has introduced a number of reforms to lower insurance costs, including discounts for using winter tires, banning premium increases for minor at-fault accidents and creating a new dispute resolution system to gain faster access to benefits and reduce fraud. While these actions have resulted in reduced rates for Ontario drivers, they have not fallen enough. That is why we invite your input on David Marshall’s recommendations, to help ensure that further changes will make the system even more efficient and more affordable.”

Charles Sousa

Minister of Finance

“Auto insurance plays an important role in our society. It gives drivers peace of mind and helps accident victims recover after an accident. Sharing your views with us gives you the opportunity to shape the future of the auto insurance system in Ontario.”

Yvan Baker

Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Finance
