Description of Offence: 

L&M Meat Distributing Inc. was convicted of failing to promptly kill a fallen animal contrary to the provisions of Ontario Regulation 105/09 under the Food safety and Quality Act, 2001.

Teodoro Lauri, being an owner, was convicted of failing to promptly euthanize a fallen animal contrary to the provisions of Ontario Regulation 105/09 under the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2001.

Date of Offence: June 28, 2017

Date of Conviction: October 9, 2019

Penalty Imposed:

L & M Meat Distributing Inc. - $3,000.00 plus $750.00 Victim Fine Surcharge - totaling $3,750.00

Teodoro Lauri - $2,000.00, plus a $500.00 Victim Fine Surcharge - totaling $2,500.00

Background: 

On June 28, 2017, an inspection was conducted by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) at L & M Meat Distributing Inc., located at 2487 14th Line Gilford, Ontario.

OMAFRA investigators encountered over 100 animals in pens that were part of the facility. The health of the animals ranged from healthy to deceased.  Some of the animals, were disabled, others recently dead, while skeletal remains were discovered unburried in the barn yard. A total of 6 animals had to be immediately euthanized by an employee of the plant and 7 unburied dead whole carcasses were found.
